SoulFunkful
SoulFunkful are Sheffield’s freshest funk band. They hit the scene in 2010 and are repeatedly asked to return to every venue they play, stealing the show again at this year’s St Paddy’s Day knees up in Sheffield City Centre. They have also played Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival to raving reviews. They fuse funk and soul within their original, vibrant material and make a surprising collection of funk covers sound like their own. You won’t be able to help swinging your hips and wanting to sing along to tracks that your funk-dar might not have picked up but will be screaming at you that they should be anthems. SoulFunkful is the soul child of Romance Waddington. Romance has been singing most of her life and her original material reflects experiences we have all felt, but conveyed through soulful lyrics laid over a clever mix of soul-infused funk.
You will hear the influence of Dr Funkstein himself, George Clinton (and Parliament!), in Romance’s music as well as Al Green. Storm is an original, instant, brooding soul classic. But perhaps less expected, although equally influential, has been the work of Bill Withers. Indeed, SoulFunkful’s cover of Use Me is already a staple of the South Yorkshire live music scene.
The SoulFunkful project is a collaboration of the talents of Romance on lead vocals, Mike Beatham on Lead Guitar, Ally Fraser on Drums and Trevor Haughton on Bass.
Mike has experimented with a variety of genre from thrash metal through jazz and Bossa Nova, and now to funk. He runs a popular guitar tutor website and records professional backing tracks for musicians when he’s not firing through the frets for SoulFunkful.
Trevor is an accomplished bassist and piano player. Playing for some thirty years his influences remain jazz, soul, Latin American, classical and gospel music.
This is SoulFunkful’s second appearance at Limetree Festival so we’re hoping that they’ll have something special up their sleeves for us.
