Gary Stewart
Over the past year the hard-working left-hander from Perthshire has been catching the attention and imagination of music lovers up and down the U.K with the release of his debut album, “Boy Cries Wolf”(featuring performances from Ellen Smith (Ellen and the Escapades) and Rosie Doonan (Radio 2 Folk Award nominee/Rosie Doonan+Ben Murray). Capturing audiences with his energetic live shows, filled with songs and stories of love, paranoia and prostitution, he always delivers them with honesty, passion and a good measure of Celtic Flair.
Gary has carved out a strong fan-base in his adopted home of Leeds and around the U.K. The Scottish songsmith has graced the Festival circuit also (Glastonbury, Kendal Calling, Live At Leeds, Moorfest, and the Wimborne, Warwick, Holmfirth, Bromyard, Fylde and Otley Folk Festivals). Along the way he has supported the likes of Johnny Flynn, Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, Fionn Regan,James Yorkston,Emma Pollock,James, Drever,Mcusker &Woomble, Nick Harper and Dougie Maclean. When not playing his own shows, the multi-instrumentalist also plays drums for Leeds-based band Hope and Social (ex-Four Day Hombre). He also plays drums, guitar and sings for Wakefield-based Folk singer/songwriter Rosie Doonan.
“Like Cat Stevens on Acid”-Tom Goodhand, Leeds Guide” With a distinctively raw voice and rhythmic guitar style,Gary has focused on the bright and breezy, the cheerful and chirpy, rather than the dark and dirty, with a handful of radio-friendly melodies, whilst at the same time maintaining some measure of depth in his lyrics…helped along by a handful of local musicians, the album makes up a cohesive acoustic whole…With a command over writing memorable chorus songs, Gary makes each song accessible and user friendly and finally shrugs off the blues with the delightfully optimistic Bucket of Stars, which closes this impressive debut.” – Alan Wilkinson, Maverick Magazine.
