Limetree Music & Arts Festival

A chance meeting between two talented songwriters who were both performing at a central London music venue saw the creation of ahab, an alternative/country duo who are Callum Adamson and Dave Burn.

Both of these young songwriters have grown from musical backgrounds. Their upbringing giving them every encouragement to develope their craft.

Their music is of a style away from the middle ground, yet their songs have a unique sound and take on a maturity far beyond their years. They are very much left of centre producing songs that are instantly recognisable as ahab.

The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra formed in late 2008 when members of the Kidkanevil live show and First Word stalwarts Homecut began a series of late night afrobeat sessions at Leeds’s Sela Bar. It was out of these jam sessions that The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra was born, combining their love of afrobeat with their appreciation of the space jazz pioneers of the 70’s and the free jazz trailblazers of the 60’s, coupled with a hefty nod towards James Brown. Individually they have been lucky enough to Perform with the likes of Yarah Bravo, Gilad Atzmon, Jehst, The New Mastersounds, The Haggis horns, Kidkanevil, Homecut, Kissey Asplund and Ty, to name a few.

Bang Bang Romeo were just a sparkle in someone’s spritzer until Keith Langley, ex-drummer from the Utah Saints (champions of Techno-Pop and all that is good out of the 90’s) came upon a passionate woman singing her heart out at the Doncaster Music Festival 2009. Anastasia Walker was just 16…. and just wanted to sing. Keith realised she had something special to offer, and knew a great songwriter who also stood out from the crowd. Ross Cameron had already written a thousand big songs, and played a 100 gigs singing them …all the way from the Vintage Rock Bar to the Leeds Festival. Keith knew the chemistry would be strong, and so asked them if they wanted to be pop stars….and they said it sounded like a good idea at the time!! Throw in one of Sheffield’s most enigmatic and powerful guitarists Ben Trott and you have Bang Bang Romeo……all set and ready to go.

The idea of Alex Turner forsaking the Artic Monkeys to start a ska-punk band might send shivers down a few spines, but the reality might not be too hideous, if Becks and the Bullets are anything to go by. A bunch of keen Yorkshire folk playing jazzy,brass-heavy pop and punkish pop-rock,The Bullets are headed by Becky Roberts. The singer-guitarist seems to fancy herself as a female equivalent of the Monkeys frontman,penning tracks that examine the minutiae of small-town life with a precise eye.Judging by their material so far Becks and the Bullets are worth keeping an eye on.

There are bands that write pieces of music and there are bands that write tunes, Blackout Retrospective are all about the the latter!
Formed in late 2009, Female fronted BR blend punk and metal musicality. With one of the finest singers this side of the atlantic, they produce a powerful and heavy, yet melodic sound that will leave you wanting more.

The 'Chocolate' EP is the latest funk-fuelled sweetener from the awesome 'Cantaloop'. Often described as 'one of the best live bands out there' this sees them ever pushing the boundaries in their genre and treating us to their unique 'iFunk' song craft. Feisty - kicks off the e.p with the bass bouncing and the Super-Duper-Funk horn line cutting a rug in your minds funk gland. Guitars that sound like Hammond organs but then fire up funkness that the old skool brothers would be proud of, alongside a front line social comment with a chorus hook line as big as J-lo's butt.

Bradfords own Tenacious D comes to Limetree for the third time in as many years. Anyone witnessing his previous outings will know just how genuinely funny this guy is. Wry social and satirical commentary all set to some great tunes. From “the pigeons made me do it” to “Johnny depp wi me bird” everyone’s a winner.

CHINA SHOP BULL from Leeds, West Yorkshire have been on the UK Scene since 2004, by combining infectious riffs, dubby brass with dance beats and some hyper stage activity, CHINA SHOP BULL have created a unique blend of Ska/Rave/Rap/Rock n Roll. Whilst having influences coming from the likes of Sublime, Prodigy, King Tubby, Asian Dub Foundation, Jimi Hendrix and much, much more the Fulibulbus sound is unique yet accessible.

Founded and fronted by Leeds based former preacher turned frontman Cleve "Rev Chunky" Freckleton. CBF have been spreading the "love vibe" home and abroad for the past 6 years. Having served an apprentiship in gospel music which still influences the bands sound to this day, "The Rev" has gone on to front several outfits but none so spritually vibrant as Chunky Butt Funky. The Chunky Butt Funky set brings Limetree Festival to a close on Sunday night on the main stage, and anyone witnessing the 2009 show will bear witness to the pure emotion and exhilaration of the show. Too many special guests to list here but the set contains the great and the good of the Leeds based music scene.

The Clifford Village band are a quirky folk-pop septet named after the village front-man Sam Murray comes from. The band create a unique blend of an eclectic plethora of musical folk and pop styles taken from a vast range of influences including Paul Simon, Laura Veirs to 60s pop artists like Bobby Vee and Gerry & The Pacemakers while making a round the world trip. Not one song is the same with a variety of sounds created. The band sings songs of fisherman out on the sea, beautiful cities of white and star-crossed lovers.

Craig Charles is an English actor, stand-up comedian, author, poet, radio and television presenter and former professional footballer, best-known for playing Dave Lister in the British cult-favourite sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf.

He is currently appearing in Coronation Street, playing a philandering Taxi cab owner. He also presents the hugely popular "Craig Charles Funk Show" on the BBC Radio 6 on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Devil’s Jukebox are five vaudevillains playing red-hot ragtime, dirty, dirty 20’s jazz and scurrilous blues from the wrong side of the tracks. Featuring Miss Scarlett Bonansea on Lap-Harmonium and suitcase percussion, Lotus Dubois on resonator and banjo Ukuleles, the Reverend Jim Lodge on Clarinet, Mr David Broad on washtub bass, and Dr Ezekiel Bordello on Holler, Hokum, Jug, and striptease… Jon Gomm in Sandman Magazine thought they were “darkly surreal, sinister and bewitching… for those who can’t afford LSD the Devil’s Jukebox are a great alternative.”

Formed in Leeds in 2005, the band was brought together by long time collaborators Johnny Tomlinson and Tommy Evans, and quickly gained a serious reputation on the Leeds live scene, playing a host of venues throughout the city. Fronted by the uncompromising vocals of Anna Stott, the band also boasts a heavyweight 4-piece horn section, and a locked in rhythm section featuring members of the Lion Trio. This band is on a mission. They move audiences with their rough breed of dub, reggae and ska, performing infectious original material. No heart is left untouched, no foot remains unmoved.

Ella Edmondson is a contemporary singer songwriter based on Dartmoor in Devon. She has been plying her trade around the UK for a few years, whilst honing her performing and song writing skills.

Ella has recently finished recording her debut album "Hold Your Horses" produced by Andy Seward (Kate Rusby, Roddy Woomble, Eddi Reader). The album includes stunning performances from a host of award winning UK folk musicians, who between them have been largely responsible for the enormous popularity of the genre today. Guest Appearances include John McCusker, Kate Rusby, Andy Cutting and Jim Causley.

A LIVE Hip Hop/Soul/Pop act fronted by the amazingly talented Jack Flash, Ruby Wood, and Thabo Mkwananzi. Extra Curricular comprises a unique combination of instruments with a horn section, decks and samplers, alongside guitar, bass and drums.

The EC live show is something to be witnessed, they involve the whole crowd from start to finish taking the listener on a journey through hip hop grooves, soulful vocals and huge anthemic choruses.

Dynamic, jaw-dropping harpist with a difference. Fiona Katie plays, designs and builds her own harps as well as composing unique music using influences from Celtic, Flamenco and Latin. She continues to deliver time after time giving show-stopping, foot-tapping performances at both concerts and festivals across the UK. ‘With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes’ (well ankles actually) the effect is a full ‘orchestral’ sound – to be seen to be believed…

Gilla is the label manager / A & R of First Word Records, home to some of the finest Hip Hop, Funk, Soul & Beats in Europe. With acts including The Haggis Horns, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra, The Simonsound, kidkanevil, Homecut, Souleance and 6ix Toys the label is going from strength to strength.

Following sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008 and 2009, London's most versatile a cappella group is coming to Limetree. No instruments, no electronic trickery, no compromises - In the Smoke do things with their mouths you cannot imagine. In the Smoke formed in 2007 from some of the leading lights of the a cappella scene who, moving to the big city, wanted to forge a new, cutting edge path for a cappella singing. What has resulted is a group that reflects the varied backgrounds and experiences of its membership: front-runners at international competitions; winners of arrangement awards; choral scholars; musical directors; singer-songwriters and more.

Ollie Evans aka ‘In:sight’ has always had an ear for music. “My parents took me to festivals from the age of 5, I can still remember arriving at Glastonbury in ’95 to see the Dance Tent for the first time, I was 14yrs old & too young to go to raves, I’d never seen anything like it!”

This gave In:sight the inspiration to get into DJing. 4yrs later he owned his first set of decks & within a years Ollie was making regular appearances at clubs & bars in his home town.

Jacqui Wicks came to prominence as the beguiling voice of legendary Bradford collective The Sex Patels and singing prolifically on the Northern jazz, folk, and soul circuit. Performing with her quartet of musicians, and showcasing her long awaited debut album, Vintage Live features eclectic and unique renditions of songs by Tom Waits, Nina Simone, and Nick Drake amongst other timeless classics and oddities. Beautifully arranged by long time musical partner Kevin James, the live performance of these songs forms an intimate and celebratory experience that will leave a tear in the eye and a skip in the heart. Be prepared to be entertained and moved.

James Taylor - one of the great instrumentalists of his generation - supplements his trademark howling Hammond sound with grand piano on his new album.

New World features 11 original tunes by James (two co-written with guest vocalist Corina Greyson) and features John Parricelli (guitar), Andy McKinney (bass), Adam Betts (drums), Nick Smart (trumpet/flugelhorn), Gareth Lockrane (flutes), and the aforementioned Corina Greyson.

JD73 is the brainchild of Leeds based artist/keyboardist/producer Dan Goldman a.k.a JD73. An influential and well known face on the international music scene for many years (both as a performer and studio artist), Dan has worked with many highly respected acts including Morcheeba (keyboardist/co-writer for 7 yrs), Nate James, The Jamiroquai band, Shlomo, Eska, Corinne Bailey Rae and TY, (to name a few) and has remixed/worked alongside artists including Bonobo, DJ Regal, The New Mastersounds, Mozez, Nightmares On Wax, Domu, Roots Manuva, Mark Ronson (with the Haggis Horns) plus many more.

Soulful Singer Songwriter hailing from East London, Jessie Lee Burn is has been playing the London live circuit for the last year.

Taking her influence from an eclectic spread of Jazz, Soul, Country, Ska and Reggae, she fuses it all leaving shivers down your spine and beats in your feet.

Jilly Riley is a solo artist delivering a rainbow of new sounds to your ear drums, including blues, funk, ska, and downrite soul as you've never heard before!

She's currently recording her debut single " I don't see colours" an anti racism song soon to be released in conjunction with an anti racism campaign.

A truly unique Festival act from Huddersfield featuring the soulful vocals of sometimes Hospital Records vocalist Pat Fulgoni alongside guitars, drums, horns and electronica. “Party-worthy music combining rock, funk, dance and soul” says Billboard Magazine “Gorgeous new psychedelic funk” says the NME. Recent concerts include SXSW in Texas, Beijing Midi – China, Glastonbury, Cork Jazz Festivals. Their music is featured in major US TV shows like Dirt, John From Cincinnati, Weeds, games like Stoked and Tap Tap Revenge 3 for iphone. 2010 sees Kava Kava tour the States taking in dates in LA, NYC, Texas and Arizona. A dedicated versatile performer working in wide sectors of public presentation. Lady MJ works in a wide genre of music- mainly Urban but has also performed to Dirty Electro, Hardcore, with a live beat boxer, over an acoustic guitar and a live Jazz band.

She performs her own backing tracks live or MCing/ Singing over a DJ's set.

Leonard’s Revenge have been wowing audiences with their incredibly catchy blend of acoustic, indie and rock, in 2008 recording their first demo with Leeds-based producer Jam Sponge. They formed just months before performing at the 2008 Limetree Festival, returned for the 2009 festival and this five piece indie rock band from Leeds are back again in 2010; an act definitely not to be missed! On the 6th of June 2009 Leonard's Revenge were ecstacic due to being crowned winners of Selby Town Hall's Battle of the Bands.

Leuce Rhythms’ Philosophy is simple; Fuse together all that is good in electronic music to create a pumpin’, funkin’ and down-right filthy Breakbeat sound. Forged through the DJ combination of Richard Hale (A.K.A Hale D’Vibe) and Dan De Lissandri; Leuce Rhythms have exploded onto the Breakbeat scene, setting alight dance floors across Europe, quickly earning them a party reputation that is guaranteed never to disappoint.

Liquid Steel was started in 2007 & promotes a broad range of the Bass music spectrum. With Reggae, Dubstep, Funky & Tropical House as well as Dancehall & Jungle.

Los Guajiros ,Leeds based 6 piece band deliver a message of Unity, sensuality and fiesta. The band formed by Mila Dores on vocals, Al McSween on keys and backing vocals, Joost Hendrickx on drums, Alex Davis on electric and Double Bass, Tom Lumley on flutes, saxophones and backing vocals and Aisha Lourenço on percussion, play a latin repertoire from samba to salsa, and many traditional Cuban, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Rising from the streets and suburbs of Leeds presents the newest hard hitting lads to hit the block. High energetic indie brit rock is on the list with a dash of the Arctics and a sprinkle of the new stuff. Burlesque meets bar mitzvah as the four freakish strangers entertain with dark comedy and bizarreness to transport you to a different land. Don't look into our eyes; No name loves fresh meat while listening to the intoxicating sounds of Trumpet and Glockenspiel by Sparrow and haunting jaunty music from Frans and Madam to transport you away from anything you have seen before. Come see the obscure, freakish musical, hairy armed octopi, fork teethed men and talking vegetables all lead by an amazing singing bear.

Maha Dev's Quintessence The original 1970's psychedelic rock band 'Quintessence', has been reformed by original rhythm guitarist Maha Dev. Back on the festival trail after 40 years, Maha Dev's Quintessence have been performing live for the last two years, leading up to incredible performances at Sonic Rock festival 2010, Glastonbury 2010 and finishing off the summer at the Limetree festival 2010. When Maha Dev's Quintessence performed on the 'Rabbit hole' & 'Glade' stages at this year's 40th Glastonbury Festival, Phil 'Shiva' Jones joined them, for the first time in 37 years. Shiva and Maha Dev were both members of the original Quintessence back in the seventies.

From bedroom anonymity to the front lines of British electronic music in little over six years: Matt Gill is a true rising star. As a producer, Matt has released on labels Play Digital, Moov Records and Ritual Music. His tracks have featured on Radio MK, 2FM and Unity Radio in the UK, and his third release, Miscommunicate, was championed on Kiss FM and the Resident Advisor charts by Ukrainian techno hero Vitaliy Spartaque. Matt's distinct production style draws influence from all corners of the house-electro-techno spectrum, with angular snippets of melody carried to the heart of the dancefloor atop dark, pounding bass lines and galloping synthetic drum tracks. He lists Ali Shirazinia, John Digweed, Adam Walder and Joel Zimmerman amongst his principal influences.

Formed in 2006 this quartet hailing from the north country, Wakefield’s finest “Merry-go” mix 80’s power-pop and their own unique sounds (guitar sounds like the best guitar music from the 90’s and 00’s to deliver great music… They have been compared to such 80’s acts “Big Country” and “Deacon Blue” Mixed with the influences of today’s bands “Nada Surf” “U2” and “Biffy Clyro” their songs will have your hips moving and keep your head bopping.

Mik Artistik's Ego Trip are Northern cowboys who are forever making cups of tea and leaving early. They ran rampant around England doing eighteen festivals including Glastonbury, Leeds Fest, and Latitude. A beautiful bunch of men( Mik particularly) who play an astonishing blend of rock and roll stand up. Mik rambles around the stage like a rambler, singing, spouting and sprayin straws everywhere. Johnny Flockton studiously bashes away on guitar , and Benson Walker grins expansively on bass and gets to do a bit of backing singing. Faust love 'em,so do Mick Jones, Zodiac Mindwarp....and John Cooper Clark. There's a radio 4 show called "Mik Artistik won't play ball!" due out soon and Mik is playing a gravedigger in a feature film being made this summer... Limetree look out..we're back again!

Monkey Gloo records is a collective of established professional djs, audio engineers and music producers. Spanning the last fifteen years, the Monkey Gloo djs have served three year residencies in Ibiza at Eden and Privilege and have worked alongside; MTV, Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems, Judgement Sunday and Sundessential.

Monkeyrush are a guitar band but they don’t let that get in their way – the way that Ben and Tony wind their guitar parts through each other’s and the informed sounds that they use, plus the strong and supple grooves provided by Simon and Chris mean that the band have a much broader sonic palette than the usual guitar grind.

Monkeyrush’s influences and styles, as befits the modern world, are many but they blend these styles effortlessly, often within a space of a verse or chorus. Ska, Chic-like funk, punk, and Hendrix-inspired wig-outs all feature…”Skundrix” anyone…? Add to this Fil’s bittersweet vocal style and you have an irresistible combination.

Natural Rhythm were formed in 1990 by Tony Boyce. They played many a gig all over britain and abroad before family commitments forced the band to fold in 1995 but not before they recorded their album "Bluebeat And Ska" on Skank records. This time round the band still have that hard, raw ska sound with 2 or three reggae tunes thrown infor good measure. They describe themselves as ska warriors who in Tony Boyce's, words " We dont take no prisoners man". The four core members of the band are Tony, Gary, Ian, and Yogi who have been with the band from day one. The others have recently joined and are soon to be joined on saxaphone by Dave who briefly played in the band in the early 90s and in fact played sax on their album" Bluebeat And Ska" . Natural Rhythm have revamped their old songs and have new songs in their setlist as well. "This Is Ska - Love The Ska" is one of them. The band hope to play north , south, east and west in their quest to awaken the nation's ears to ska, they're gunna keep it raw keep it SKA.

Belinda O’Hooley is best known as the former songwriter and pianist with Rachel Unthank & the Winterset (now The Unthanks). Since leaving the band, the stark, haunting piano arrangements she brought to the Mercury nominated album The Bairns have evolved and migrated to her new duo with Yorkshire songwriter Heidi Tidow. These dapper-suited gentlewomen have an unconventional, wryly observant, melancholic and sometimes uncomfortable take on life; creating their very own brand of contemporary folk song together with a stage manner likened to Jo Brand meets Laurel & Hardy. 2009 saw them touring with Jackie Oates and Chumbawamba, plus some cool summer festivals including Larmer Tree, Beverley and Shepley. With their debut album Silent June released early 2010, these two are sure to break the hardest of hearts with music that lurches out of the abyss to steel you, embrace you, and yet leave your emotions raw.

Pauline Black returns to the world ska stage in 2009, after a 2 year hiatus, to celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the 2-Tone movement. She kicks off the celebration in March 2009 with a South American tour of Argentina and Brazil, where she will perform alongside Doreen Schaeffer of The Skatalites as ‘The Queens of Reggae and Ska’. In April 2009 she joins her long time friends Neville Staple (The Specials) and Ranking Roger (The Beat) for the ‘Stars Of Ska’ tour of Dubai and Australia. She is currently writing her memoirs entitled ‘Pigment Of My Imagination’ for publication this year.

Newly formed in 2010 by a small group of talented LGBT community members and actors, Pink Triangle Theatre is a professional theatre company which aims to create and perform shows with a powerful message against homophobia, bigotry and intolerance. They will be performing on Saturday night on the QiS stage and we are really looking forward to bringing theatre to Limetree x

Hailed as “Ghana’s Bob Marley” by England’s leading influential newspaper New Nation, Rocky Dawuni burst on to the African reggae scene in 1996 with his debut recording, The Movement. An introspective journey into social and spiritual consciousness, the album garnered immediate rave reviews, as well as two hit singles, "Sugar" and "What Goes Around.” The CD was also released in the U.S. to critical acclaim and glowing praise.

Rodina’s self-released debut album "Over the Sun" is a cool blend of chill-out and pop. Originally from Co. Laois in Ireland she moved to the UK as a youngster and grew up within the diverse Leeds music scene. Rodina has a unique style of her own but has been compared to Morcheeba, Goldfrapp and legendary singer, Astrud Gilberto. With ethereal vocals and a great depth in production, her self-penned songs are catchy and embracing. On the album, Rodina features the Haggis Horns (Mark Ronson's live band - and the horn section for Corinne Bailey Rae & Amy Winehouse) and Joe Tatton (Corinne Bailey Rae & The New Mastersounds) who also produced the album. Rodina has played gigs in Spain and Istanbul, done festivals and performed a special gig supporting Corinne Bailey Rae. With the release of her double A-side single and with more gigs in the pipeline, 2010 should be a great year for Rodina.

Described as bouncy electro-powered party punk, Rosie are a trio of stage dominating, crowd moving pit wizards. Their live performance a gypsy explosion of stage invasions, glow sticks, pirates and pretty much anything they can get away with. “Everyone likes to party...” says front man Doug, “we just provide the backing music.”

Rougier is a London based Entertainer who's been performing his eclectic theatrical shows for almost a decade.

He started out on the London cabaret circuit before travelling further afield to perform in Europe and Japan. Two years living in Berlin gave him the opportunity to perform on both the German and Dutch cabaret scenes until he returned to London to extend his study of movement.

Samantha was born in 1985 and raised in North Yorkshire. Her passion for music was apparent from an early age, with her first inspiration coming from the well known artist, Alanis Morissette.

This drew Samantha to start singing and playing the guitar at the age of eleven and quickly developed her talent and grew to become a conscious singer/songwriter, basing the majority of her music around her guitar.

Shelly Cooper Stand-up comic, Presenter, actor, & writer, will be making a Stand-up appearance on the Queerinspace Stage as part of the Comedy slot on Saturday Afternoon at the festival. Shelly is a star with many strings to her bow, not only has she written for and appeared on TV and Radio but she is also a psychotherapy expert on BBC Breakfast News, Sky News and LK Today.

Operating mainly in Bristol the Signal DJ's are promoters of a regular drum and bass night bringing DJ's from all over the world to one of the homes of dnb. As a collective we hold residencies at Hospitality and Sh*t the Bed playing everything from dnb to house.

What a great year it’s been for the Geordie duo Smoove and Turrell, having released their first album “Antique soul” on Jalapeno Records in April 2009. The lads have gone from strength to strength both on the UK scene and across Europe. Previous to there album being snapped up by Jalapeno they have released a limited 7” single “I can’t give you up” on German label “Club Tikka”. The single soon found itself in a bidding frenzy on Ebay with copies reaching a startling £166, surely not for a new 7” I hear you cry!

Ste McCabe's electro-pop-punk is driven by queer revolution, feminist action and sarcastic bigot-baiting. He's been described as everything from "authentic and brilliant" (Boy George) and a "queer-feminist-punk-poet for the people" (Time Out) to "like spew!" (Unpeeled) and has released two critically acclaimed albums on fabulous indie label Cherryade Records. Bring a big dose of humour and leave your rosary beads firmly at the tent entrance!

Symbiosis Sound System is a collective of artists, musicians, dj’s, sound technicians and box builders that started out in Leeds 2004 with a love for dub, roots, reggae, jungle and excessive bass. Playing free parties and underground raves across the north of England Symbiosis soon gathered a strong following and before long were providing the sound system and dj’s at many quality events and club nights.
